CHS Defeats Valpo To Improve To 2-0 IN DAC Play
Any stoppage of play can lead to big momentum changes in any sport, especially in tennis.
For Chesterton, that theory was tested Tuesday night as they were up in every match against Valaraiso when the light rain swept through and forced a 45-minute delay at the CHS Tennis Complex.
After the courts dried up and the sun peaked out, the Trojans got right back to work and didn't let the delay break their momentum. Chesterton went on to defeat Valpo 5-0.
In singles action, Kenzie Kania (#1) didn't drop a game in her win, Aleksa Sorgic (#2) won 6-1, 6-0 and Junior Lauren Pilarski completed the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #3.

"Today wasn't an easy day to play that's for sure," coach Tom Bour said. "The wind was pretty strong today, we had a delayed-start due to rain and then the long rain delay in the middle. To add to the drama, we ended up being pulled off the court for most of the JV matches due to lightening in the area. But overall, the girls played outstanding and we loved how they never let their foot off the gas after getting out to leads early on."
Some of the most competitive matches came from the JV match. Chesterton led the team match 4-1, when lightening fired-up the sky and the players had to pulled off the court, which ended the JV match.

The Chesterton JV will travel to Plymouth Saturday for a 8-tream tourney and the Trojans will host Valparaiso on Tuesday.
The Trojans forced three 3-setters, but Culver would go on to win all of those 3-set matches in the end.
Earning the lone-team point for Chesterton was Junior Aleksa Sorgic who held off a late come-back from her opponent to win 6-2, 6-4 at #2 singles. Sorgic remains unbeaten as she improves to 8-0 overall.
"Aleksa had a mental break late in the second set and her opponent did start to play better as well. But I love that fact that she reset and focused-in at 5-4 to go on to close the set and match out in the end," coach Tom Bour said.
At #1 singles, Kenzie Kania won her first set, but then would drop the next two sets as Culver edged out Kania. Kania's 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 loss Friday puts her record at 7-2 overall.
Sophomore Lizzy Navarro drop her first set in a tiebreaker at #3 singles, but Culver would go on to win the second set & the match. The 6-7, 1-6 loss for Navarro was her varsity debut.
In doubles, the #1 team of Ava Komp & Amelia Smith lost 6-2, 6-3 and the #2 team of Ellery Denny & Anisa Faroh lost in three sets 1-6, 7-5, 3-6.
"I thought Culver's net play and energy was alittle better than us tonight. But I loved the effort our girls put out and was very impressed with Denny & Faroh to come back to force a 3rd set after only winning one game in the first set. We have a bunch of singles players playing doubles, but we're seeing improvements every match and we're happy with what they've been doing so far this season."
Chesterton's JV took care of business Friday as they defeated Culver 9-5.
At #1 singles, Regan Krachinski won 8-2 in a match that featured long rallies and a match that was close to two hours long. At #2, Caroline Carrillo fell 2-8 and Freshmen Emma Dobson lost 3-8 at #3. Parker Metcalf played #4 singles and won her match 8-4.

Trojans Start Season with Back-2-Back Tourney Titles
For the second straight weekend, the Trojans varsity brought home a 1st place title at an 8-team tournament.
A week ago Chesterton won all five flights in Logansport to win that tournament. On Saturday, the Trojans almost duplicated their efforts from a week ago, but winning 4-of-the-5 flights this time around will have to do.
CHS had 1st place finishes at all three singles spots and at #2 doubles. The top doubles spot would lose in the championship round for a 2nd place finish.
"We've really played well in these big tournaments and Saturday was not easy with the competition being much tougher than the previous week," coach Tom Bour said. "LaPorte challenged us last weekend, but this weekend there were three teams in the field that had nice teams. Our depth was the difference maker."
In singles action, Kenzie Kania's day at #1 singles gave her wins over East Noble, Westview & Columbia City. Junior Aleksa Sorgic remains unbeaten on the season at #2 and her day consisted of wins over Columbia City, East Noble & Westview. At #3 singles, Lauren Pilarski championship run had wins over South Adams, Westview & Huntington North. Pilarski's 2nd round match was the highlight of the day as she came from behind to win over Westview by a score of 1-6, 7-5, 10-1.
The most dominating performance of the day was the #2 doubles team of Ellery Denny & Anisa Faroh who not only took home 1st place, but the Trojan tandem only dropped 2 total games on the day. At the top doubles spot, Ava Komp & Amelia Smith went 2-1 as they fell in the championship round 4-6, 4-6 to East Noble. Komp & Smith cruised through the first two rounds with wins over New Haven & Westview.
Sophomore Lizzy Navarro came in as a alternate, but played in place of a team that was short a player. Navarro would fall in straight sets to East Noble's #2 singles player.
"We saw some things that were better from a week ago and that were better when we played Plymouth, but especially in doubles we have some things to address. Thankfully, we're talking about better execution or strategy, it has nothing to do with effort or attitude on the court...that has been off the charts from everyone."
Chesterton will have their biggest test of the season on Tuesday as they host #19 SB Penn.

ChS Opens 2024 With a Tournament Title at Logansport

"It's great to do well in these team tournaments beacause if you have a good day, that means everyone has to do their part," coach Tom Bour said. Defending DAC & Sectional Champs Ready To Roll in 2024
Heading into a season where a team just graduated 7 seniors, most would think a rebuilding year would follow or a team may be too young to succeed.
Not this team.
Even with the seven talented departures, Chesterton is ready to defend their Duneland Athletic Conference title, which was their first since 2013, and look to win their fourth straight IHSAA Sectional. Along with the DAC and sectional crowns, there's also two varsity tournanent titles they'll be defending in 2024 which will be at Logansport & East Noble.
The Trojan's JV finished last season unbeaten at 10-0 and won the DAC title for the 3rd year in a row. The importance of the JV's success and the development of the younger, less experience players play a huge role in Chesterton's progrom the last several years.
"Our goal every off season is to outwork our competition," said head coach Tom Bour. "This off season was no different and actually it was one of the best efforts from our girls throughout the summer, fall and winter that i've seen in a while. When you combine a great off season with very competitive, hard working girls....I doubt they're thinking about this season as being a rebuilding year."
Returning from the starting post-season team from last year is Aleksa Sorgic (11), Ava Komp (12) and Kenzie Kania (10). As a Sophomore last year, Sorgic excelled at the top-singles-spot going 18-3 and was All-DAC & All-District. Komp played at #2 singles last year and had big wins in the Sectional and was awarded All-District honors. As a Freshmen last year, Kania teamed with Senior Aubrey Isakson at #1 doubles and the Trojan tandem went 14-1, was DAC's top doubles team and was All-District #2 ranked team.
Also returning from that post-season team is Ellery Denny (12), Anisa Faroh (11), Lauren Pilarski (11) and Amelia Smith (10). Smith and Denny have the most varsity experience out of the four, but look for all of these players to make a huge impact in 2024. These players were part of that undefeated JV team and along with them will be Seniors Regan Krachinski & Katie Krygoske, Lizzy Navarro (10), Elena Clark (11), Caroline Carrillo (11) and Paige Engels (10).
"Right now, Regan Krachinski is fighting her way into a varsity spot along with Pilarski. We have a lot of competition for that last varsity spot, whether it be a singles-spot or doubles-spot. Krachinski, Navarro and Carrillo were some of the most improved players over the off season and it's putting pressure on those that may be ahead of them. Competition breeds success," said Bour.
Currently, Chesterton is still putting the pieces together as team rankings and challenge matches are still being figured out. But look for Sorgic or Kania to play either #1 or #2 singles. Komp's experience in doubles (Sophomore season) and playing #2 singles last year makes her a great fit for either #3 or part of the top-doubles spot. Denny, Faroh and Smith will all fit nicely in a doubles spot with Krachinski and Pilarski also in the mix. Smith has varsity experience in singles too, so her versitility could play out well for coaches Bour and Scott Garrison.
Thirty-eight players tried out for the 2024 squad, the final roster is at 28. The Trojans will open-up the season at The Logansport Invitational April 6th. Their first full team event will be on April 11th as they'll travel to Plymouth.
